Daylight Under the Carpet: Replacing the Floor Pans in a 1964 Ford Galaxie

Daylight Under the Carpet: Replacing the Floor Pans in a 1964 Ford Galaxie

C2C Fabrication

If you can see the driveway through your Galaxie's floor, the answer is new steel, not another layer of fiberglass. Here is how to scope the job, buy only the panels you need, and plan a weld in installation that outlasts the car's next owner.

Why Galaxie floors go first

Full size Fords of this era hold water like a sponge. A tired windshield seal or cowl drain feeds moisture into the jute padding, and the padding holds it against the steel for years. Rust starts at the low points: the front footwells and the pan under the rear seat.

Size up the damage before you order

  • Pull the seats, carpet, and padding, then take a wire wheel to the floor until you see bare metal.
  • Push a screwdriver into every brown spot. Anything that gives is coming out.
  • Get under the car and check the seat braces, body mounts, and toeboard. A new pan welded to rotten supports is wasted money.
  • Photograph and measure each area so you order sections, not guesses.

Match the panel to the rust

Most Galaxie floors don't need a full replacement. Driver footwells usually fail first, followed by the rear pans and the section under the rear seat. Buy the sections that are actually gone and keep the good factory steel.

The install, in order

  1. Check door gaps before you cut anything and recheck them after every section comes out.
  2. Lay the new pan over the old floor, trace it, and cut inside the line. You can always trim more.
  3. Test fit, trim, and test fit again. Aftermarket panels are manufactured to match factory contours, but every 60 year old car has moved a little.
  4. Grind the flanges clean and coat mating surfaces with weld through primer.
  5. Plug weld or stitch in short beads, moving around the panel so heat never builds in one spot.
  6. Seam seal every joint, then epoxy primer and undercoat the bottom side.
